Whether you’re celebrating you or your dog’s birthday, or just having a party, you might be wondering whether you can include your dog in the festivities by giving her a slice of cake. While pets really shouldn’t eat cake or cupcakes, a small bite of some kinds of cake may be safe for dogs to have. For example, you may be able to give your dog vanilla birthday or pound cake but never chocolate cake. Even the occasional piece of cheesecake or cake icing is OK, but this doesn’t mean that you should share sweets with your canine all the time. Below, we’ll discuss the pros and cons of feeding your dog cake, some of the reasons why pets shouldn’t have any, and a tasty recipe on how to make a special cake that dogs can eat!

Cake Offers Very Little Health Benefits
Although some of the ingredients in cake can be healthy by themselves, other ingredients like sugar and butter far outweigh any benefits from the good ones. Sure, cake tastes great, but all you’re doing is adding extra calories and fat to your dog’s diet (and your own).
Most types of cake are high in sugar, which can cause many health problems, including obesity, diabetes, and cavities. You may find some sugar-free cakes at the store but they contain artificial sweeteners that may be highly toxic to dogs.
Wheat flour, one of the main ingredients in cake, is also unhealthy for dogs, along with raisins, gumdrops, jellybeans, coffee beans, and macadamia nuts. Any cake with chocolate is definitely forbidden because it’s extremely toxic to dogs.
If you really insist on giving your dog a piece of cake, you can give her a taste of a white cupcake, pound cake, or birthday cake, as long as it doesn’t have any dangerous additives, and you wipe off the frosting.
How To Make A Birthday Cake For A Dog To Eat
Rather than giving your dog a sweet cake with lots of sugar, butter, and flour, why don’t you give her a healthy meat cake? This might sound strange to you but your dog will absolutely love it! Here’s a recipe on how to make a cake for your dog to enjoy!
Ingredients
- 1 ½ cups flour
- ½ tablespoon baking powder
- ¼ cup margarine, softened
- 3 eggs
- ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
- 2 ½ ounces chicken flavor baby food
- 1 cup grated carrot
- ½ cup cooked ground beef, crumbled
- 1 cup plain yogurt
Directions
Preheat oven to 325° F. Grease and flour a round 8-inch pan, and set aside. Beat eggs well, and set aside. Mix flour and baking powder, and set aside.
In a large bowl, combine margarine, eggs, and oil until blended. Add chicken and carrots. Slowly add the flour mixture, and continue mixing until all ingredients are well blended.
Pour batter into prepared baking pan. Bake for one hour. To test for doneness, poke cake with a toothpick. If it comes out clean, the cake is done.
Place cake on a wire rack and allow to completely cool. Frost with plain yogurt, and use ground beef as sprinkles
No, Dogs Can’t Eat Cake
Although a tiny bit of cake isn’t likely to be dangerous for your dog, you shouldn’t get into the habit of giving your dogs cake in the first place. If your dogs have never tried any, they won’t know what they’re missing and are less likely to beg for a few pieces. Be sure to try the recipe above for our Doggy Cake which I’m sure they will love!
