Can Dogs Eat Honey?

Published January 18, 2022 by DFG Staff

We all know that it is never a good idea to give sugar to a dog. But is it okay to give your dog or puppy honey as a substitute, so they can enjoy a sweet treat once in a while? Dogs tend to have a sweet tooth, and if they can steal a snack, they are certainly going to do it. So, can dogs eat honey? The answer is “yes” but you shouldn’t give them a lot. There are many health benefits to adding honey to a diet, and it can also be healthy for dogs when given to them in moderation. Here’s why dogs can have honey sometimes!

Honey For Dogs

Honey contains natural sugars, as well as some vitamins and minerals. In fact, honey has long been used as a natural sweetener in many foods, including some dog treats. The problem with honey is that it does have a high sugar content, which can cause your dog to become obese if you give them too much of it. The sugar in honey can also lead to tooth decay. If you do give your dog honey as a treat, it is a good idea to get into the habit of brushing their teeth regularly to avoid this problem.

While raw honey is the healthiest form of this sweet treat, it is not always good to give it to all dogs. If your dog has a compromised immune system, raw honey should be avoided as it can contain some botulism spores. Raw honey should also not be given to puppies, as their immune systems are not fully developed yet. It is also not good to give honey to dogs that are obese, or that have diabetes.

Health Benefits of Honey For Dogs

When given in small amounts, honey can actually be very good for dogs, since it does have many nutritional benefits. For instance, it is well-known to be great for helping heal wounds when applied topically, and it isn’t going to hurt your dog if they lick it off. Honey is also a great source of the following vitamins and minerals:

  • Vitamins A, B complex, C, D, E, and K
  • Calcium
  • Magnesium
  • Potassium
  • Manganese
  • Copper
  • Calcium

Honey can also be good for dogs that have allergies, and it can help with digestion problems, as well as fighting infections. It is loaded with antioxidants, and the darker the honey, the more antioxidants it contains. Honey is known to be good for sore throats, and this is true for both humans and dogs. It can also be a remedy for seasonal allergies.

As long as your dog isn’t allergic to honey, it should not be a problem to give them honey in small amounts. It can be used to treat a number of health issues, including allergies, sore throats, and infections, and it is a great way to let your dog enjoy a sweet treat without giving them something that is loaded with refined or processed sugars. Talk to your veterinarian about how much honey you can safely give to your dog as a treat.
