Has your dog stared longingly at you lately as they beg for a piece of some Twizzlers or other red licorice that you’re eating? Well, Twizzlers aren’t exactly the greatest snacks for us so you may be wondering whether Twizzlers are bad for dogs. Technically, Twizzlers aren’t toxic or poisonous for dogs but this doesn’t mean that you should be giving them any on a regular-basis. As a general rule of them, you should not give dogs candy. For this reason, Twizzlers and dogs just don’t mix!
Why Twizzlers Are Bad For Dogs
Twizzlers are also referred to as red licorice. But, red “licorice” is not actually licorice. It’s simply candy. Only black licorice can be truly called licorice, and when you come right down to it, even black Twizzlers aren’t pure licorice, and are more candy than anything else.
One of the main ingredients in Twizzlers is sugar, which we all know is not good for dogs as it can cause several health issues, including heart problems, diabetes, and obesity. Your dog is unlikely to die if they eat Twizzlers, but there are other treat options out there that are much healthier for dogs.
If you give your pups sugary treats too often, they can end up with any of the above-mentioned health issues, as well as others, including dental issues.
Before giving Twizzlers to your dog, read the list of ingredients on the package to make sure that it doesn’t contain xylitol, which is an artificial sweetener and highly toxic to dogs. If it does, do not give them this treat, and keep it well out of their reach.
This is also why you generally should not give your dogs gum or syrup as well. Fortunately, Twizzlers don’t usually contain Xylitol but it’s always a good idea to be on the safe side and check.
No, Dogs Can’t Eat Twizzlers
There is always the chance that your dog will spot an open package of Twizzlers, and if it is within their reach, they are likely to get a hold of it. If you think that your dog has eaten a substantial amount of Twizzlers, it is important to contact your vet as soon as possible, especially if you notice any adverse side effects, including vomiting and diarrhea. Most likely, these problems will pass within a day or two on their own without the need for any treatment.
